Terms matter: ibogaine is not a conventional wellness product, and its possible therapeutic potential remains under study rather than established care. At a glance Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive alkaloid primarily found in the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga , a shrub native to Central West Africa. Origin, traditional use, and the language of “supplement” Ibogaine is an indole psychoactive alkaloid found in the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga . For centuries, indigenous cultures in Gabon, Cameroon, and Congo have used iboga in spiritual rituals and traditional medicine. This traditional healing context deserves respect, but it does not establish safety or effectiveness for modern addiction treatment. Western explorers documented the plant’s effects in the late nineteenth century, and ibogaine was first isolated in 1901. It belongs to a broader family of psychoactive alkaloids that includes compounds associated with psilocybin and DMT; the indole alkaloid classification helps describe its chemistry, not a clinical recommendation. Calling ibogaine a natural product can imply ordinary consumer safety. That is misleading.
